Description

In the Modern Structures series, modern aesthetics and midcentury architecture is the guide.  With a background in drafting, I design unique mini structures.  There is an outward movement of the subject matter that allows the artwork to feel as if it were extending beyond the edges of the canvas.  The play of lines and shapes also draws the eyes to the quiet spaces in between the lines. The artwork is done with handmade paper, ink made of pine soot and watercolors. The handmade paper has silk, cotton, wood chips and mulberry pressed into the pulp. The ancient process of preparing the artwork for framing is similar to mounting scrolls. Wheat paste is applied to the back side of the artwork and layers of paper applied until it reaches the ideal resilience. This method of preparing works on paper dates back 2 thousand years and can only be done by a handful of artisans in the US.

The result is a warm velvety, tactile surface. The ancient process of preparing the artwork for framing is similar to that of mounting scrolls. The artwork is coated with a UV protectant varnish.
